Funded by the European Union through the Horizon Europe Programme, the BIOservicES project brings together a strong and diverse consortium of partners and stakeholders, each bringing their unique expertise, experience, and resources. Guided by dedication and driven by perseverance, this collaborativ team works synergistically to explore the complex relationships between key soil organisms and the delivery of essential ecosystem services across various land uses.

In their collaborative effort, they are not only exploring the impacts of climate change on soil systems but also emphasizing the vital role of private investment and institutional frameworks in fostering sustainable land management practices. To ensure the continuity of this important mission beyond the initial EU funding, securing private investments is essential for the project’s long-term success and sustainability.

WP1
The project delves into soil ecosystem research and engages stakeholders extensively, involving a co-creation strategy and the development of a digital collaboration platform. WP1 will establish stakeholder communities as the project hub (SO1), achieving objectives through creating these communities, organising engagement activities, and developing a digital collaboration platform.
WP2
WP2 establishes a framework for soil analysis, focusing on indicators, sampling methods, and biodiversity assessment, providing data to WP3's and WP4's objectives. WP2 will link soil organisms to ecosystem functions and services (EFS), standardising sampling methods and involving partners for comprehensive data on soil biodiversity and EFS interactions.
WP3
WP3 will utilise AI to uncover soil biota-EFS connections and predict climate or land use impacts on biodiversity and EFS, aiming to identify drivers, upscale data, and define indicators for soil biodiversity and EFS relationships. Tasks involve statistical analysis of soil biota, niche identification, and development of hybrid models to predict biodiversity patterns and ecosystem services.
WP4
WP4 will establish an economic framework to assess soil biodiversity's value in providing ecosystem services (ES), encompassing both market and non-market valuations. This will involve developing a unified framework, valuing marketed ES, estimating non-marketed ES, and integrating soil biodiversity's economic value into ES assessments.
WP5
WP5 will analyse policies, incentives, and barriers for soil biodiversity protection, formulating tools and policy suggestions by reviewing policies, updating carbon farming certification, examining soil improvement schemes, and developing implementation recommendations.
WP6
WP6 will coordinate tailored communication, dissemination, and long-term exploitation strategies for efficient outreach. This integral work package ensures precise outreach, effective knowledge transfer, and sustainable utilisation of project results.
WP7
WP7 will guide project coordination and management through structured procedures and effective technical coordination, fostering powerful communication within the consortium and external stakeholders. Tasks include establishing management structures, ensuring scientific coordination, meticulous data management, efficient resource utilisation, and financial oversight.
WP8
The objective of WP 8 is to ensure strict adherence to the defined 'ethics requirements' for the project.
