The UN General Assembly, through the Global Soil Partnership (GSP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), established World Soil Day in 2014 to highlight the urgent need for sustainable soil management. Since then, it has become a key moment to advocate for healthy soils and raise awareness about their role in addressing critical global challenges.

This year’s theme, “Caring for Soils: Measure, Monitor, Manage,” focuses on the importance of:

• Accurate Soil Data: Understanding soil characteristics is essential for effective land use and agricultural planning.
• Sustainable Soil Management: Informed decisions about soil use are key to ensuring food security and combating land degradation.

BIOservicES and its mission

At BIOservicES, we aim to understand the connections between soil organisms, such as spiders, and the delivery of various soil ecosystem functions and services at different scales, including field and landscape levels. We identify the pressures and drivers resulting from diverse land uses and climate change, and we also conduct an economic valuation of the contribution of soil organisms to ecosystem services.

BIOservicES will focus on enhancing the understanding of the relationship between soil organisms and soil structure, as well as how this interaction is influenced by land use and management practices. This effort aims to contribute to Soil Mission objective 6, “Improve soil structure to enhance habitat quality for soil biota and crops.”

Thus, we will provide new knowledge and develop indicators based on soil organisms and the ecosystem functions and services they support. Additionally, we will create digital decision-support tools and models to assist in designing climate-resilient management practices and monitoring, conservation, and restoration programs. These tools will be adaptable to various environments, including different land uses and biogeographic regions across Europe. The goal is to maintain and enhance the multiple ecosystem functions and services soil organisms provide.

Moreover, BIOservicES will emphasize the importance of soil health and the ecosystem functions and services delivered by soil organisms in updating EU and national legislation.
